Choosing the Right Chair

Choosing a new wheelchair can be a daunting task, as there are many designs to choose from. There are a number of wheelchair manufacturers that produce court sport wheelchairs including the Top End Performance Basketball Series by Invacare, the Quickie All-court and TiLite TiSport BB, RGK - Performance, Quatro, and Interceptor, the Colours Swoosh, and Eagle Sportschairs. Demo models of these chairs are often available at your local wheelchair distributors such as Advanced Mobility and MediChair in BC.

When choosing a sports chair you will need to consider your seat size measured in width and depth as well as seat height in the front and back of the frame and the backrest height. These measurements as well as wheel size, camber dimensions, and accessories all need to come together to match the user's body and personal preferences.

When choosing a new wheelchair, you should always try more than one wheelchair before making your final choice. Remember, you will be spending a lot of your time in your chair, so it needs to be right for you. One tip may be to find a veteran basketball player who is of similar size and classification to you and give their sport chair a try.
