On May 22, 2012, Rick Hansen Celebration 25 will mark the exciting culmination of the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour. This spectacular show will honour remarkable Canadians, recognize everyday heroes and feature performances by well-known Canadian recording artists including Sarah McLachlan, Jann Arden, Johnny Reid, the Canadian Tenors, Marianas Trench and David Foster.

The challenge of developing in wheelchair basketball is an interesting one. Many players have the opportunity to participate at a variety of levels in games and practices. In British Columbia, we have different leagues for athletes to participate in, and as you develop as a wheelchair basketball player, you will probably play in a number of these leagues at the same time.

Sport BC named Kathy Newman the recipient of this year’s Daryl Thompson Award, presented by the Beedie Group, for her 30 years of leadership and advocacy for Wheelchair Sports in BC. This honour, to be awarded at Sport BC’s 46th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards presented by TELUS, recognizes a British Columbian who has contributed to sport in an extraordinary way over an extended period of time.

BC Wheelchair Basketball is looking for a highly motivated individual who has minumum 3 years coaching experience and certified NCCP Level 3 or Comp Development in wheelchair basketball or stand-up basketball (or willing to coordinate the achievement of this certification level by the spring of 2012/ and demonstrate international equivalency.)

On the May 7/8 weekend, BCWBS in conjunction with Trinity Western University hosted an exhibition tournament. This tournament consisted of two parts: BC Breakers tournament and Be Squad tournament.

The BC Wheelchair Basketball Society is thrilled to be hosting 6 club teams from across Canada once again for the 2011 CWBL Open Finals. We look forward to welcoming all the teams to a new venue the South Surrey Recreation Centre with our BC host teams the Douglas College Royals and Lions.

Kathy Newman, the Executive Director at BC Wheelchair Sports has been honoured with the top award in Sport and Recreation in BC. In Her Footsteps honoured three women who have made a difference in sport in BC on the evening of November 4 in downtown, Vancouver. Other honourees this year are Olympic sprinter and athletics organizer/administrator Diane Clement and national women's basketball coach Allison McNeill.

The Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) and BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) are pleased to be hosting the 2009 Americas Cup, a Men’s America Zone qualification tournament for World Championships in 2010 (Birmingham, England), from August 23 – 30, 2009 at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
This coming weekend will see the second hit out for the division II teams for this season. It will have been five weeks since the last round of division II games which saw Victoria and Breakers at the top of the table, so this weekend’s game look set to be hotly contested.
Registration is now open for the Langley Junior Program. The program is open to junior players ages 8 and up. Both able-bodied children and children with disabilities are welcome, and no experience is necessary. For a quality sport experience, the ability to follow instructions, good upper-body mobility and the ability to use a manual wheelchair are required.
