Kathy Newman Win In Her Footsteps Award

November 19, 2010

Kathy Newman, the Executive Director at BC Wheelchair Sports has been honoured with the top award in Sport and Recreation in BC. In Her Footsteps honoured three women who have made a difference in sport in BC on the evening of November 4 in downtown, Vancouver. Other honourees this year are Olympic sprinter and athletics organizer/administrator Diane Clement and national women's basketball coach Allison McNeill.

Although the award was given for her contribution to the sport in BC, Kathy’s reach has extended beyond than just this province. Kathy has been working for BC Wheelchair Sports for over 20 years and has achieved so much in her time there. Her most recent success; the 2010 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships has set a whole new standard of excellence for international wheelchair rugby events.

Prior to the outstanding international event that has been in the works for the past two years Kathy was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Bridging the Gap program which has been implemented across Canada and is the reason many wheelchair basketballers today are involved in the sport. Kathy is also involved in Wheelchair Basketball Canada which she sits on the board as the VP of marketing and communications.

BCWBS would like to congratulate Kathy for gaining the much deserved recognition of the In Her Footsteps award, it is a fantastic honour and we are all very proud to be associated with Kathy Newman!
