Last Saturday (Feb 28), BC Wheelchair Basketball hosted a women’s skills day at the Royal Oak Middle School in Saanich. 17 female athletes including new and veteran players attended this camp to work on their individual skills and enjoy the game experience.
We were fortunate to have Tim Frick, the legendary former provincial and national coach along with Simon Cass, BCWBS Regional High Performance and Development coach and Marni Abbott-Peter, BCWBS High Performance Director to lead the camp.
The camp featured individual skill development including chair skills, ball handling, and shooting in the morning, team building activities and the Long Term Athlete Development session during the lunch break, and some 4 on 4 and 5 on 5 games in the afternoon.
Athletes came from Victoria, Nanaimo, and Greater Vancouver. Sarah, a member of the Greater Vancouver Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Club, said “I liked everything!” when she was asked what was her favorite part of the day. Tim Frick’s wife, Gerry, who was at the camp also said that “This is just so great to see so many girls playing the sport.”
“This was the first time for BCWBS to host a women’s focused camp on the island and we had a great turn-out especially with so many new players attending. We definitely would like to keep providing more opportunities for female players, and hopefully we start a women’s league in the province in the near future.” said Makiko Harada, BCWBS Manager of the Program Development.
