BCWBS Congratulates Amanda Yan on Winning the Wheelchair Basketball Canada True Sport Award

April 11, 2014

(Vancouver, BC) -BC Wheelchair Basketball Society congratulates Burnaby's Amanda Yan on winning the prestigious Wheelchair Basketball Canada True Sport award, which is given annually to an elite athlete with a commitment to fair play and inclusion. This is the second major award that Yan has won in the past month. In March, she was named BC Wheelchair Basketball Society's Female Athlete of the Year.

"Amanda Yan is that perfect mix of coachability and talent," said BC Breakers Head Coach and Paralympic gold medalist Marni Abbott-Peter. "She's got a bright future."

In just two weeks, Yan's talents will be on display when she leads the B.C. Breakers in front of a hometown crowd at the 2014 Canadian Women's Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which will take place at the Richmond Olympic Oval from April 25-27. This is the first time that the women's national championships have been held independently of the men's.

"We're so proud to be hosting the first Canadian Women's Wheelchair Basketball Championships and to be giving local athletes like Amanda a chance to showcase their skills in front of a hometown crowd," said BCWBS Interim Managing Director Sian Blyth. "We invite everyone to come out to experience the exciting sport of wheelchair basketball."

Yan will be part of a dominant B.C. squad that also includes Paralympians Jessica Vliegenthart and Janet McLachlan. The B.C. Breakers won the tournament in 2012 and are looking to recapture the gold medal this year.

This year, the 2014 Canadian Women's Wheelchair Basketball Championships will be webcast thanks to Viasport and will be available at viasport.ca. For more information, visit the tournament website at www.2014cwwbc.com or contact:
