Fun and skill development were the two goals of this Sunday’s (Feb 17) wheelchair basketball clinic in beautiful Comox. I had the pleasure of heading to Vancouver Island to work with ten very enthusiastic athletes.
The camp started out with individual skills, and everyone worked hard to improve their pushing mechanics, chair skills, dribbling and shooting. During games like Dance Party and Fun Fact Tag, I soon learned that the Comox group is a fun-loving bunch…not to mention, excellent dancers.
After a quick lunch break, we shifted our focus to team skills. All the athletes asked lots of great questions and showed major improvement in their understanding of the game. The afternoon wrapped up with some scrimmages, where it quickly became obvious how much the group had learned.
This weekend, on Feb 24, Comox will put their new skills to the test when they take on teams from Powell River and Nanaimo at their Hoopfest. From what I’ve seen, they should do very well.
Thanks to the Comox Valley Wheelchair Sports Society for having me!
