On April 14th, the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society hosted its 19th Annual Fundraiser, Hoopfest at the Cambie Secondary School in Richmond. The day was once again a great success and we are so very thankful to everyone that has supported us this year – some which are long time supporters.
With the return of a few Hoopfest “veterans”, the energy was high and everyone was treated to a full day of healthy competition. Returning this year was some of our long time supporters: the Burnaby Fire Department, the Surrey Fire Department, the Vancouver Fire Department, and the Vancouver Police Department. The roster of 8 teams was rounded up by the Rick Hansen Foundation, ICORD, WestJet and a motley crew of friends and family of BCWBS.
Everyone played hard but with always a smile on their face. At lunch, all the participants and volunteers had a chance to watch some of our BC and National Team members play in an exhibition game. Even a few of our junior members, Evan 3 and Weston 4, wheeled around the gym showing some great skills.
The Vancouver Fire Department and the VPD kept the reigning champions, the Burnaby Fire Department on their game, but at the end of the day, Burnaby Fire took away the title for the 6th year in a row.
Here are the final standings:
1. Burnaby Fire Department
2. Vancouver Fire Department
3. Vancouver Police Department
4. Wheel Jetters (WestJet)
5. ICORD
6. Surrey Fire Department
7. BCWBS Famly and Friends
8. Rick Roll’d (Rick Hansen Foundation)
This event would not be made possible without the support and involvement of our volunteers from Cambie Secondary Schoo, our BCWBS players and coaches, all the teams and our generous sponsors and partners: PopChips, WestJet, Panago Pizza, The Original Cakerie, Cobs Bread, Squd, Yummy Little Treats, Tim Hortons Bridgeport, Steve Nash Fitness World & Sports Club, Grouse Mountai, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Vancouver Canadians Baseball, Vancouver Aquarium, Fat Burger, Skyline Athletics, WorkSafe BC, Dermalogica, Coquitlam Express
Hoopfest is designed to raise money to support wheelchair basketball programs throughout the province and we have managed to raise $8,155!!
