Last weekend saw the opening round of the Division II competition for 2010. Six teams competed in Kelowna including, Kamloops Bulldawgs, BC Breakers (Lower Mainland), Vintage Cable Cars (Lower Mainland), Canada Games (Junior), Victoria Titans and the hosts the Okanagan Thunder.
The Victoria Titans were the most successful team of the weekend, winning all their games over the course of the weekend. The combination of Tony Golston’s height, and Deion Green’s ability to read the floor ensured that no team came within 10 points of the Titans at the end of the weekend.
The Canada Games team had a big weekend, playing their first games together as a squad. An exhibition game was played on the Saturday night with the Canada Games juniors going up against nine veterans of the game made up from the other teams competing. This was a good opportunity for the juniors to get a taste of the tough competition that they will be going up against at the Canada Games in February.
One of the best games of the weekend saw Cable Cars and Kamloops tied at the end of the game being forced into a five minute overtime which was basket for basket until the Kamloops managed to score three on the run without a reply from the Cable Cars to take the win 57-55. The Breakers v Thunder was also an exciting game to watch with the Breakers coming back from a 16 point deficit to secure the W by just one point.
The next time these teams all face one another will be at Trinity Western University in Langley on November 27/28. Canada Games Juniors and the Breakers are two developing teams to watch out for. While the self-proclaimed “vintage” Cable Cars and the Kamloops Bulldawgs will be looking to knock Victoria off the number one position.
The standings at the end of the weekend where as follows:
Victoria 3-0
Breakers 2-1*
Kamloops 1-2
Cable Cars 1-2*
Okanagan 1-2
Canada Games 1-2
*Cable Cars were forced to forfeit their game Sunday morning due not having five players to start the game.
