Douglas College was the sight of a shooting camp for our members September 24th. The shooting camp was attended by a variety of athletes, with the morning session focused on the up-and-coming players of the future, and the afternoon attended by athletes who are already competing at the provincial level. Athletes received detailed shooting analysis by some highly skilled coaches with elite able-bodied experience. Curtis Nelson, Douglas College’s women’s basketball coach, and Milan Azanjac a former professional player in Europe joined BCWBS coaches in shooting fundamentals, shooting drills, and analysis of each individual player. This camp kicked off “shooting month” as the theme for programming for BCWBS in October.
Some of the objectives of the camp included developing proper shooting mechanics, as well as identifying different drills that will improve shooting range and accuracy. One of the themes that came out of the camp from Coach Nelson was “game shots from game spots at game speed”. It was great to see regional players coming from as far away as Kelowna, Seattle, and Victoria to take part in the day. I am sure all these regions will benefit from the information brought back and shared with their teammates.
There are no short cuts to becoming a good shooter. It is an individual skill that takes hours of focused practice to develop good shooting habits that will see you have consistent success in game situations. Keep working on the process of becoming a better shooter whether that’s lay-ups, foul shots, or that game-winning basket from your favourite spot.
