(Vancouver, BC) -BC Wheelchair Basketball Society congratulates Burnaby's Amanda Yan on winning the prestigious Wheelchair Basketball Canada True Sport award, which is given annually to an elite athlete with a commitment to fair play and inclusion. This is the second major award that Yan has won in the past month. In March, she was named BC Wheelchair Basketball Society's Female Athlete of the Year.

From April 25-27, six of the best women's wheelchair basketball teams in the country will compete for the national title at the Richmond Olympic Oval. You won't want to miss this exciting event:

Good luck to the BC Junior team, which will be competing at the 2014 Junior Wheelchair Basketball National Championships in Edmonton at the Saville Center this weekend. The tournament features the top junior provincial teams from across Canada and acts as the seeding tournament for the 2015 Canada Games.

BCWBS is thrilled to host a Junior Wheelchair Basketball Division again in 2014 Steve Nash Youth Basketball Challenge hosted by Basketball BC. This is an exciting event focused on providing junior players with a positive competition and skill development experience just for them.

Children with disabilities and their families were thrilled by a visit from hockey legend Trevor Linden at a very special Let’s Play playdate yesterday. Linden, who is a board member of the TELUS Community Board, came to present a cheque to the Let’s Play program and meet the participants. He even took time to play some wheelchair ball hockey and wheelchair rugby with the group.

Congratulations to the 11 athletes selected to represent BC at the 2014 Junior Wheelchair Basketball National Championships this March in Edmonton. The Junior National Championships is an important step for the team towards the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

Telus has given us a generous grant for the Let’s Play program and on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 former Vancouver Canuck star Trevor Linden is presenting us with the cheque. He would love to meet some of our Let’s Play participants and their families so we are hosting a Let’s Play date at Sunnyhill, 3644 Slocan Street, Vancouver from 3-5pm.

Amanda Yan (Burnaby, BC) and Janet McLachlan (North Vancouver, BC) were named to the women's national team and Bo Hedges (Wonowon, BC), and Deion Green (Victoria, BC) were named to the men's national team.

BC Wheelchair Basketball Society congratulates Amanda Yan, who was named to the CIBC Team Next Program along with 66 other Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. She will receive from CIBC $15,000 in funding over three years as well as invaluable life skills and sport mentorship from eight of our nation’s finest high performance athletes. The CIBC Team Next mentors include: Josh Cassidy, Mark de Jonge, Stephanie Dixon, Kara Lang, Kyle Shewfelt, Mary Spencer, Bruny Surin and Simon Whitfield.

Junior athletes from across the province gained valuable skills and had fun at the 2013 Junior Wheelchair Basketball Challenge. The weekend event offered skill-development and a round-robin-style tournament for athletes aged 8 to 25. This year, Junior Challenge also served as the selection camp for the 2014 BC Winter Games, which will take place in Mission this February.
