BC-CWBL Division I teams play against each other as well as agaist a team from Calgary this weekend at Trinity Western University in Langley. Each team will play four games over the weekend (6 games overall).

(Ottawa, ON) – Wheelchair Basketball Canada is pleased to announce the names of the 12 athletes who will represent Canada at the 2011 Parapan American Games slotted for November 12-20, 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Parapan American Games double as Canada’s opportunity to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympics, were the team is shooting for a fourth consecutive podium finish.

Whether you are new to the sport or have been playing for years, come out to the 2011 All-comers Wheelchair Basketball Festival for an afternoon of games and skill competitions. Experienced players will have a chance to hone their skills and get additional game time and new players can try the sport in a fun, supportive environment. People with and without disabilities are welcome to attend, so bring your friends and come out for a day of fun, food, and prizes!

Tim Frick Winter City League has started last Tuesday, January 11. Holly Tawse leads the league for the first time, partnering up with the veteran coach Joe Higgins. Lots of players came back from the fall league with some new faces registered and are to have great fun again this winter!

BCWBS hosted another regional training center camp (HP camp) January 7 – 9, 2011. This high performance camp brought players together from across the province and provided them with the opportunity to kick off the New Year with some great wheelchair basketball. The weekend was comprised of some benchmark testing, some individual skills, as well as team play and strategy.

Division I continued with games January 8th and 9th at Douglas College. The Douglas College Royals and Lions played two highly competitive games highlighted by some great team play by both teams. In the first game, the Lions came out pressing hard and creating many scoring opportunities. The Royals then responded by playing three excellent quarters of basketball, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Joe brought team Higgins to Powell River on the weekend of December 10/11 for his first-ever visit to the newly-formed wheelchair basketball club, the Powell River Ravens. In February 2010, the Powell River Disability Sport Club redirected their efforts exclusively on creating a recreational community team. In the past 8 months, over 40 Powell Riverites have tried their hand at wheelchair basketball with 15 or so becoming dedicated Ravens.

It's that time of year again....time to start thinking about nominating individuals and or organizations from your club or region for the Annual BCWBS Awards. As you know we present these awards at the BC-CWBL Finals banquet in March, however selections will be made early in the New Year - Deadline for nominations is January 15, 2011.

BCWBS provides sport wheelchairs for local programs such as city leagues and weekly programs. We have limited number of wheelchairs and in order for everyone to maximize their use, here are a few rules that we would like you to keep in mind.

The Let's Play Program is a cooperative effort between BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS), the Rick Hansen Foundation and the Province of British Columbia. It is intended to help kids with mobility limitations to become physically active early in life by helping to establish the fundamental skills, knowledge and abilities needed to confidently participate in play, sport and physical education with their peers.

BCWBS is hosting a tournament for 4 Canada Games junior provincial teams: BC, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, this weekend in Richmond. This will be good test matches for all the teams to see where they are at now and get ready for the Canada Winter Games in Halifax in February, 2011.

Over the last three months, BCWBS members have had the chance to participate in a number of game opportunities. Regardless of your level of play, you now know the things you do well on the court, the things that you need to improve on, and hopefully what level of play you enjoy most. Because whether you are playing in the Tim Frick League and preparing for January’s session or you are training for National Team selection camp, it is time to take your game to a new level.

Welcome to a brand new season! This has certainly been a hectic and exciting one so far, starting in September for me with the BCBOA Superclinic out in Langley and the Dribble on Wheels camp in Seattle. High Performance practices started up at Douglas College early September, and have been going full tilt since then, including a six week appearance by Steve Ramsbottom and his chair skills sessions. I’m sure the athletes will agree with me that they were a most helpful way to kick off the season.

This past weekend (November 26-28), BCWBS in partnership with Trinity Western University, hosted a CWBL Division I and II tournament for the Lower Mainland and regional club teams.

The Junior Wheelchair Basketball Challenge was held at Hugh McRoberts Secondary School this past weekend (Nov 13/14). With three teams in the Junior 10ft Division and two teams in the Mini Division, it was a great weekend for BC’s junior wheelchair basketballers.
