BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, the City of Surrey, Viasport and Wheelchair Basketball Canada are hosting an NCCP Introduction to Competition Coaching Clinic for wheelchair basketball. The Introduction to Competition course is appropriate for entry level coaches who are interested in teaching athletes (both disabled and abled bodied) fundamental wheelchair sport skills in a fun and safe environment and preparing athletes for local and regional competitive opportunities. No prerequisits required, knowledge of basketball is an asset.

BCWBS is seeking a Regional Coach who, in collaboration with the Canadian Sport Institute, community stakeholders, and local wheelchair basketball clubs, will be responsible for the planning, implementation, coaching and evaluation of regional level athletes, as well as coach and official development initiatives. The Regional Coach is a key position within the Integrated Performance System in BC. The goal of this system is to develop athletes and/or teams who have a high probability of successfully representing BC in national & international competitions, including the Canada Games and Paralympic Games.

On Sunday, our small-but-mighty BC Wheelchair Basketball Society team participated in the Scotiabank Half Marathon and 5k to raise money for our organization. It was an amazing event that we were proud to be a part of.

There are some great opportunities to get active this summer in Fort St John! The City of Fort St John and PacificSport are helping to launch a community wheelchair sports program in Fort St John, beginning this Saturday at the Pomeroy Centre with a wheelchair basketball session and then hosting four drop-in wheelchair sports sessions this summer, with the goal of having additional programming this Fall.

It's time for our most exciting fundraiser! On May 21st, HOOPFEST returns and we need your help to make it the best one ever. We've already got great partners like Steamworks Brewery, Blasted Church, Vancouver TSN Radio, CHIMP, and Fortius Sport & Health on board. Community groups and organizations -- including firefighters, police, and members of the disability community -- have put in teams and are ready to try wheelchair basketball!

Registration is now open for the Kelowna Jamboree. The 7th annual Jam is an opportunity for high performance and recreationally competitive players with and without disability to get together and play some basketball. The tournament will host players from BC, Alberta and the USA in fun games to play together. It’s ideal for people of all levels of play. Players will be shuffled onto different team combinations so as to allow everyone to have a chance to play with new people for each game. Games will be running time with a short break at half time, and there will be hockey subs to keep the game moving and add a fun element. A social event/BBQ is also included.

BCWBS and Douglas College hosted the BC Breakers Wheelchair Basketball Festival on March 21/22 at Douglas College in New Westminster. BC Breakers played games against the Calgary Rollers and Edmonton Inferno women’s clubs from Alberta in preparation for women’s nationals in April. 22 players from BC and two women’s clubs from Alberta attended the festival along with 8 coaches and several volunteers.

The last season’s Division 2 Champions, Vancouver Cable Cars defended their provincial title this season, beating the Classics 82-74, in a hard fought championship match last Sunday (March 8.)

Come out and watch the 2015 BC-CWBL Finals this weekend! There are 7 teams attending including some athletes that were recently up in Prince George representing Team BC at the Canada Games. It will be a great weekend of high performance wheelchair basketball and we would love to see some fans cheering on the many teams from all over BC! We would like to thank Hosting BC, the Province of BC and ViaSport for their support of this event.

Last Saturday (Feb 28), BC Wheelchair Basketball hosted a women’s skills day at the Royal Oak Middle School in Saanich. 17 female athletes including new and veteran players attended this camp to work on their individual skills and enjoy the game experience.

Team BC refocused and came back strong to beat Nova Scotia 53-38 at the 2015 Canada Winter Games! We're now in consolation round action, so we'll be playing against New Brunswick tomorrow at 1 pm. If we win, we'll likely finish in sixth place.
