On the weekend of April 8th and 9th, 2017, the Gladiateurs de Laval seized the national crown with a 80-71 victory against the previously undefeated BC Royals Sunday at the 2017 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) National Championship at the Université du Québec à Montréal. The Alberta Northern Lights defeated Variety Village 79-70 to secure bronze. BC Wheelchair Basketball Society and BC Wheelchair Sports Association are hosting a Multi-Sport Have a Go Day on May 23rd from 5pm-8pm at the Okanagan Mission Secondary School. Participants will be able to try wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis all in one spot!

Fomer national team and provincial team athletes Marni Abbott-Peter and Richard Peter were inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame last Saturday (May 6) at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond. Their incredible achivements through their athlete career were recognized by the Basketball BC community along with eight other inductees.

Congratulations to Ben Hagkull and Tanner Jung! These two talented young athletes have been named to the U23 Men's World Wheelchair Basketball Championship team. They will compete at the Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto from June 8-16, 2017.

Congratulations to Stacey Friedman, who was the grand prize winner of the BCWBS raffle. She won 2 tickets anywhere in WestJet's world, including the U.K. We are so grateful to Westjet for the generous donation. The money raised will be used to support wheelchair basketball programs and services across B.C, ensuring that people with disabilities across the province will be able to live active, healthy lives.

BC Wheelchair Basketball is seeking an individual to fulfill a fulltime Program Coordinator position for a one year contract . Program areas will include provincial league and tournaments, recruitment and retention initiatives, some junior programs and Let's Play program activities and assisting the Provincial Coach with provincial team programs and associated administrative duties.

BC Breakers competed at the CWBL Women’s National Championship held in Burlington, ON last weekend (April 21-23). Finishing 2nd in the round robin, Breakers faced Saskatchewan in a cross-over game and secured a spot in a semi-final by beating them 59-53.

BC Wheelchair Sports Association (BCWSA), in collaboration with BC Wheelchair Basketball Society, Access Services and Britannia Community Centre, is pleased to host an Aboriginal Have a Go day. Individuals with and without disabilities will have an opportunity to try different wheelchair sports including wheelchair tennis, rugby, athletics, and basketball! Furthermore, peer mentors such as Richard Peter (a five time Aboriginal Paralympian in wheelchair basketball) will be leading the Have a Go session alongside BCWSA/BCWBS staff.

BC Breakers 2017 Team is heading to Toronto this Thursday to compete at the CWBL Women's National Championship. Six women's teams will be competing at the tournament held at the Haber Recreation Centre in Burlington, ON on April 21-23.

Over the March 25th/ 26th weekend, the BC-CWBL teams came out and gave it their all during the finals at the Spectrum Community School in Victoria. Each team fought some tough battles to the finish line, but in the end it came down to the Cable Cars competing with the Vancouver Classics during the final game, with a big win to the Classics with a final score of 63-51.

The best wheelchair basketball teams in the province will battle for the title of BC-CWBL champion at the 2016-17 BC-CWBL Finals in Victoria this weekend. The event will be held at Spectrum Community School- 957 Burnside Rd W, Victoria BC, V8Z 6E9 . Attendance is free.

BCWBS and BC Breakers hosted an annual BC Breakers Festival in Victoria, with the support of the Victoria Wheelchair Sports club. The event was held in conjunction with Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s basketball champions at the University of Victoria on March 11 & 12.
