The Langley Gold Rush wheelchair basketball program is well into its second year and so far the results have been fantastic. With a great mix of new and returning players as a new and fairly young coach I couldn’t be more thrilled with the energy and enthusiasm each and every one of my athletes brings each week. BCWBS has needed a program in the region for a while, and now we finally have one.

In typical BC Wheelchair Basketball fashion we took to the court in high gear early in 2010-11 and never looked back. The 2010-11season was one of our busiest ever with expanded programming in both the participation based and high performance areas, enhanced coaching and officials development, and the introduction of our Let's Play program focused on kids 8 years old and younger across BC. Our thanks to Mike Prescott for his work in this very successful program! Our regional programming was also enhanced through the developing clubs in Comox and Powell River. Congratulations to club leaders Karin Kratz and Lindsay Peake for your work in these new areas. BCWBS's success is a direct result of our volunteer leaders, coaches, dedicated partners and hard-working staff. I am always proud to be a part of the community which is BC Wheelchair Basketball. I would also like to take the time to express our sincere sadness in the passing of past athlete, board member, and friend MJ Boudreault. MJ, you will be sincerely missed.

Douglas College was the sight of a shooting camp for our members September 24th. The shooting camp was attended by a variety of athletes, with the morning session focused on the up-and-coming players of the future, and the afternoon attended by athletes who are already competing at the provincial level. Athletes received detailed shooting analysis by some highly skilled coaches with elite able-bodied experience. Curtis Nelson, Douglas College’s women’s basketball coach, and Milan Azanjac a former professional player in Europe joined BCWBS coaches in shooting fundamentals, shooting drills, and analysis of each individual player. This camp kicked off “shooting month” as the theme for programming for BCWBS in October.

Almost 30 participants from the wheelchair basketball community came out to try their hand at the sport of golf on September 12, 2011 at the scenic and challenging Redwoods Golf Course in Langley. Playing by Texas Scramble rules meant that every team had a chance to score well and every participant had an opportunity to make his or her shot count. As well as the usual methods of winning the game (the team with the lowest score was captained by our own Brad Hagkull), there were extra prizes on select holes for closest to the pin (men's and women's), and the straightest drive.

Thanks to everyone who gave their feedback on the new 4-on-4 format. Many of you noticed that there was a lot more scoring and ball-handling opportunities in 4 on 4, and that you enjoyed it. If you didn't like it or have some suggestions on how it can improve, however, feel free to drop Arley an email.
